I know this is an old thread, but I ran the trail today. It's in my friends back yard... so we hit it up and I did my first "real" trail ride in my Jeep.

Montvale. If you're coming from Roanoke, you turn left as soon as you pass the police station/library/school/whatever that is... There's always a sheriff's car parked out front. Stay on the road for a couple miles and you'll end up on gravel switchbacks. Keep going past the state maitenence and you will come up on one last driveway with a big log cabin at the end of it. You want to go left, not right (the driveway).
I think I'm going to hit it again Sunday if anyone wants to go. It's a walk in the park for most of you, but it's local and it's something everyone can do and enjoy (I think).
If you plan to go up without me at any point in time, no big deal... It's a legit open trail from what I was told, but he warned/asked me to give him a heads up so he can let his family and neighbors know what's going on if they see a bunch of cars going by onto the trail. As I saw, there have apparently been some vandals hitting the trail in the past and they're trying to self police that problem.

hey ya'll i'm thinking about running this today with one of my buddies from vmi in his toyota. what is this terrain like? is it in any way comparable to stoney run or shoe creek? less or more difficult?
would anyone be interested in doing stoney run and shoe creek today? the only reason i was thinking bobletts is because im not sure if i can find the trailhead and make the transistion between the two trails and end up in lexington the way we'd like to without paul (blueh2o) last time i checked he worked nights so im not sure if i wanna call him up to get trail info. anyone know it well?

It's a very easy trail. When I ran it there were a few small sketchy areas that you have to go slow on but for the most part you can cruise the trail without much effort, and I can't imagine getting lost at all. As far as getting to the head of the trail, you can't miss it. You take Montvale Rd all the way up. You'll hit gravel, end of state maitenence, and then when you get to the end of the road you stay left. If you veer right, that's my friends parents driveway. Don't go right. LOL!

I started up this trail with a friend of mine... unfortunately I had my trailer attached with our dirtbikes and it just seemed like rut after rut at least in the beginning... which was not fun with my low trailer. We were quick to turn around. lol
I'll have to go back one day without the bikes.

Once the dirt road ends, take a right to make it to Buchanan.

I ran this trail(fire road) today. Nothing real technical but a great "beginner" trail.
I ran the trail in "2-low" taking my time with 2 stops, one at the parkway to answer a phone call and one to pick up some gloves that had been dropped on the trail. It took me about an hour from start to finish(hard top to hard top) or about 2 hours from Hardies in T-ville to Montvale Elementary at 460. There is some mud holes and spring crossings, one rock garden although I'm not sure that was a legal obstacle or not so I stayed off of it and there are some nice "off-camber" sections.
I did not air down or disconnect, just dropped the rig into 2-low to keep the revs up and the engine/tranny cool.
You turn off of Rt 11 on to Pico Rd, do not make the first hard left, stay straight to the top of the hill then go left onto the gravel, that is Bobblets Gap Rd.
At the Montvale end you will turn onto Goose Creek Valley Rd, stay straight onto Pike Rd which will take you to the trail head.
I'll lead a beginners ride up there sometime in the future.

I'm off for the rest of the week, so I'm game. Would prefer not to wheel in the rain just mainly because it gets really muggy and I don't want to suffocate with no A/C and the windows up :D

I hit Boblett's Gap again today with a friend, and let me just say this: WOW.. the start of the trail from the Montvale side was SUPER rutted out... It was nothing like that the last time I ran it. I was really off camber through the first section with the line I had to take, which made it kind of fun, but I was worried about getting something hung up on the rocks. Other than that, it was a pretty rough ride and I was concerned that my Jeep was going to literally rattle apart, but it was a fun easy trail despite all that. There was also quite a bit of mud and standing water if that's something you're interested in.

I hit it for the first time on the 21st and it was a great time. The Montvale side was pretty darn bumpy. My YJ nearly beat me to death. I took a friend who has a landrover with 33s and he was cruising along like he was on a gravel road. My 3 year old twins had a blast riding over the rocks and through the mud. I would like to find a trail with some more challenging hill climbs and bigger boulders. If anyone knows of another good trail in the Roanoke Valley, I would love to hear about it.
