View Full Version : Potts will not open on April 1st

Just to let everyone know, Potts will not be open until later in April due to trail conditions and there is still some snow on top. I have heard reports that the upper gate is open and I would think that either the forestry service left it open or someone opened it for them. I personally would not go in there until I was sure the trail was open.
I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks for the update Jon. I called the local office and they told me Apr 1st. I'd heard also the upper gate was open, and have warned a few I know to stay away at this time. Keep us posted!

Just got word from Martin that the gate was opened by someone other than the forestry service. I would not be caught up in there for anything!
Yes, i will lead a ride up there when its opened and my Jeep is on all 4's

I spoke with Martin today and the opening date for Potts is still yet to be determined. Its up to Cindy at this point I guess. If you have ever run the trail after a long period of rain it can be a mess. Cant say i blame them for delaying the opening, excesssive rutting at this point is a eminent. Im sure it has dried up since the first announcement considerably and should be open soon.
I encourage anyone that can attend the upcoming trail clean up with SWVa to attend. Myself and a few others will be there.
Thanks
Sean

It looks like it will be mid-late April before Potts will re-open. Also it appears the gate was left open by the NFS after the end of bear season in January. That is why many of you had reported the gate being open. It should be closed right now.

just give the mountain a lil more of a break from wheeling...

Yep, once it opens it will be like a freeway up there every weekend. We really need one or 2 more "good" trails around here to spread out the traffic.

Thats about what I average a year, I try not too run it too much so I dont get bored with it. I hope to branch out this year and wheel in Tennessee some, Mountain City and Windrock.

yeah i ran potts 4 times last year i think. My goal this season is to wheel at least once a month. And i forgot i had a convention the wekend of the MOR i have to go to in orlando so i dont know if im goingot ake it up there but a trip to potts would have been nice. I want to check out some of those other placed to. We will have to "plan a trip" to windrock.

I doubt I'll get an inspection sticker on my rig again so I'd be shotty anyway. Last time I ran it I did the whole think in 2wd except for the bypass, which I probably could have done.

It's in the works, but everything takes time with government...

I've always wanted to do a Subaru Brat.

back a few years ago, we had a run across there and had 1 full size dodge short bed with 39's and another full size dodge ext. cab long bed with 35's with a camper shell on it go thru there.. camper shell had a few marks besides that was it..
used to be a few hummer groups go thru there, but not for awhile..like to go watch them sometime..

..hey guys! I just called the Blacksburg Forestry office # (1-888-241-6669) and spoke to a real nice lady, forgot her name, she works part-time up there, I asked her on status of Potts Jeep trail. She put me on hold and then came back and said the release is not yet on the Forestry web site but Potts is now open.Yay baby!
She said in the upcoming days the web site will be updated showing this.
Time to plan a trip!:thumb:

Right now I would have to shoot for next Sunday, the rig is done and ready but I did not get a chance to fill my CO2 bottle today, I had to work.
I can lead a ride next Sunday as long as my kid does not have a baseball game that day.
