Educate me. 3 link or 4 linked rear? 3 linked will be the cheaper route but what are the advantages over each?

Well. You shouldn't chose a suspension based soley on price. You should determine what your end result is that you want and work towards that.
A 3 link is not necessarily cheaper. Because you need a panhard bar to locate the axle.
A dual triangulated 4 link does not need the panhard, but is a little more difficult to set up.
Both will flex really well if properly set up. The limiting factor will be your shocks. What are you doing this on? More info is required. Do you know about the calculator and what all the numbers mean? You need to weigh the rig at each corner to set everything up right. (I can tell you where to do this)
Factors (to name a few):
Arm length
seperation at frame
seperation at axle
location on frame
center of gravity
sprung weight
unsprung weight

This will be done on the 4runner. I have not come across many people who choose to keep coil sprung rears unless they go to coilovers on 4runners.
However from what I have seen the 3 link seems to be the most popular route. The panhard is already there they just add a longer drop bracket. They also utilize some of the factory control arm mounts in the setup.
When it comes to the shocks. I will probably add a cross brace between the frames and angle the shocks.
I know nothing about a calculator.. and really would not know where to even begin. The only thing I can say for sure is I know what springs I am getting and I will have to extend the control arms or make new ones.

PM me your e-mail address I have them on my computer I'll e-mail to you. Then I'll explain them. One is the 3 link and one is the 4 link. You will need to fill out all the data in the teal colors. Roger Severa can wiegh your rig. Individual corner weights. I can pm you his number. There really is alot to linking. You just don't build it because that is the way someone else did. It needs to be individualized per rig. If it's done right it will perform awesome. If it's done wrong you'll have bigger issues on your hands.
I can't imagine going from a 4 link rear to leaves. That's just crazy.
Matt can you move this to tech? I think that is probably where it belongs.
