I need to replace the 2 Barrel Carb on my fords 351W. its an 84 f250. I was looking at a reman but i can get a 4 barrel for 40 bucks more brand new. Question is. Ive never replaced a carb before is it a huge pain in the ass?? Its all engine. No ECU or 10 million vacuum lines.
Thanks in advance.
p.s. Or if someone wants the job.........

To change from 2v to 4v carb requires rwplacing the intake manifold... Easy swap, but can be costly. Also with a 4v you wil only be using 2v unless at heavy throtte. Look to add atleast another $150 min to do conversion.

wonder if i should just leave it a 2 barrel Prolly better gas that way anyway right? will a 4 barrel make that big of a difference? will i have to change the manifold?

Matt, that's going to depend on your uses... Again the way a 4v carb works, while at normal driving, only 2 of the 4 barrels is open and being used. On most newer 4bbl carbs, the secondaries are vacuum actuated based off a set vacuum pressure from engine RPMs. So yes, you can get similar fuel economy from a 4bbl, as long as you don't drive with a heavy foot.
Now... to complete the swap from 2bbl to 4bbl, you will need the correct 4bbl intake manifold, new thermostat, complete oil change, coolant top-off, Intake-gasket set. It's an easy swap, I've done it alot... mainly the ford FE Big blocks, but also on the windsor engines. Assuming no snags are hit during disassembly, it would take me about an hour and a half or two for disassembly, cleanup, reassembly, and tuning.
As for my opinion, depending on mileage on engine, and without any other engine mods, I would stick with the 2bbl carb, as gains would be minimal unless running an aftermarket Alum. Intake, and aftermarket carb.

Well while you have the intake of then you should also do a cam. While your at it put on new heads.:yup:
Actually to do the swap like JT said is not all that difficult just time and money. You have to find a stopping point. You can go crazy with mods. I do think you'll notice the difference with a 4 barrel and it's worth it in my opinion. I wouldn't mess with the toher stuff yet.
JT I forgot you were a FE expert. I had some issues I had to figure out that I just could have called you on.:rolleyes-1:

im not afraid to install the carb, its the tuning. I was hoping they came out of the box bolt on ready to go but im afraid ill screw something up. I wanted to keep the truck stock as possible and not throw a bunch of money inot it but a reman 2B is like 300 bucks. I can get a 4b for that much might as well upgrade the manifold and STOP!!! there lol. if the truck wasnt so damn ugly i might go furtgher but right now it serves its purpse well. It looks jsut like your matt only its poo poo brown and not a dually.

Or a crew cab, or a big boy motor.:harhar:
I think you're right about stopping at the carb. Keep it stock and reliable. Out of the box they should be close. Gabe's brother is a carb genius he can do anything you want. I just wouldn't get a Holley. They are a tinkerer's carb. Go with an Edelbrock.

I tend to agree, for what your using it for, carb/intake upgrade will be great, and for as low-of miles compaired to age, your in great shape. I've got the 351W in my 96 Bronco, that just hit 175k great motor, still has tons of power for the mileage. They're just overall great engines, that I hate ford for discontinuing in production vehicles.
As for out of box tuning.... they are "supposed to be" Bolt-on ready... but i've never had one bolt on w/o some form of tuning work.
And Matt, I love the FE engines, but what you have is the 385 series... which includes the 429 and 460... never really messed with them.

well supposedly the 84 f250 can pull 9500 lp Im guessing in Appalachian mileage that translates to about 6500 with no problems. Thats all ill ever need. Getting a camper that weighs 3500 pounds and when i do decide on another rig ill get a low weight trailer and should have any problems. It is still a 3/4 ton truck dangit.

That truck will pull basically what ever you want. Is it an auto or standard? Overdrive?

i think it is a "c6 tranny" JT is going to come by this weekend and take a look at it so i dont order a bunch of stuff that wont work. i think its a 4 speed Auto so i think it does have over drive. my plans are to get the truck running good, get the honey do list of construction on my house completed and somewhere in the middle get a rig i can beat up and actually have a good time in. Instead of sweating it all the time. So keep me in your thoughts should you happen to come across a trailer for sale :)

A C6 is not an overdrive tranny.
I'll give you a lousy deal on my trailer.:2thumbsup:
