We got a heads up that the guy who now owns Bobcat plans to develop it. Be on the look out for guys on Utes in the area if you go. He said he plans on putting up gates and putting a stop to us riding in there. Just thought I'd let you guys know before someone was in trouble with the law for trespassing or something. Bad news all around, but there doesn't seem to be anything to do but accept it and try to show our good nature by not causing problems. I know I'll sorely miss the trail. :(

Well that sucks! Another good trail is taken from us. I'm glad I got to run it a few times last year and this year.

Potts is our only local option now, or travel to far away places.

I thought that only a portion of the trail was on private property.

what end is he going to develop? the side closer to campus that already has some houses going up or the entire thing? i would think the more "fun" sections for us would be hard to develop on. either way that sucks cause bobcat was always a fun ride.

This really sucks! I knew it would only be a matter of time, but still...

I thought that only a portion of the trail was on private property.
Yes, only the lower portion by the coal hill is private, the top is national forest. The problem I can see now is the only "exits" are through private land, and I could see the USFS closing the top trail since there would be more 2 way "traffic" that would be more likely to cause trail damage, stuckage, etc...

This STINKS!!!! I liked that trail!:(

If anybody in the area has more info please post it up.
Can we speak with the developer about trying to keep access to certain sections?

Thanks
Sean

The part of the trail that runs from Coal Hill to the top of the mountain has been purchased. Nat'l Forrest land starts right at the top of the mountain where you take a right turn and start down towards the mud holes.

Chris, the president of the NRV Jeep Club, has sent an email to the USFS to find out about the trails future. I'll post more as I find out.

That really blows. I have only been there once and had a blast. That the one really cool trail that the wife and kids could handle. I think Potts would scare the you know what out of them. Fenwick is family friendly and all but not too exciting.

Bobcat is up next to Blacksburg. I think Fenwick mines is out in Craig county near New Castle.

I really don't even want to post on this one. Bobcat is my favorite trail, my first really. It just cannot get closed down, it is the perfect place for first time wheelers or stockers to go have fun and test their skills, rigs. There has to be a bobcat.:fingerscrossed:

I feel your pain, I hate that I never got a chance to run it. I tend to find the good in anything, but cant find one in this case... but there are other places that first time wheelers and stockers can go.... its just a litte farther away..

Hey does anyone know if Bobcat is open right now? Have they gated it off yet or can you still get into it? I'd like to go this weekend if it;s open still before they do decide something

The lower section is closed... no more coal hill.
I heard they moved boulders and trees in the way.
As far as I know, you can still run the top, but I am not sure how far you are allowed to go.
We had a discussion about local trails with the USFS at our last NRVJC meeting. Basically they said they couldn't give any access info on Bobcat since so much of it is private. Same goes for Mtn. lake. They can't call either a Jeep trail, or give permission due to the private land issues (although there is still, and should remain to be, full access at mtn lake.
They did assure us Potts will stay a Jeep trail, and they are actually looking into expanding it some to access another rock formation, but that's not in stone.
There was also discussion about making more forest roads OHV friendly. Basically, as long as there aren't run-off issues or other environmental factors, more and more forest roads are going to be non-maintained (lack of funding), but open to OHV traffic :) It may even be encouraged just to keep the roads "open".
Finally SOME good news about the local trails! :wings:

Well that's good news. I guess this is one benefit of the recession:D They don't have the funds to maintain the roads. So we get to. Thanks for keeping us posted Drew.

I know for a lot of the fire roads and stuff that there is usually a master key that opens all of the locks on gates. I doubt if this would be possible, but it would be really cool if as a group we could contact the forest service and find out about acquiring a key so as to keep the locked roads clear for them. We could have some sort of volunteer clean-up crew that runs the road and clears the debris and such since they can not do it all themselves. It is a long shot but it would be a lot of fun and give us a reason to drive the trails more. :thumb:
