Not sure what you are looking at friend but I will try and take a stab at a couple broad answers for you.
Do snorkels work? Most definatley look at Jon's build (Old Blue) for a snorkel example. Simple but effective concept keeps the air intake up and away from the water during a water crossing or soupy mud hole.
Ram air I'm assuming you are referring to a cold air intake. All factory air intake on modern FI cars will have a silencer plenum or box along the intake path to quite the rush of air when under heavy acceleration. You get a few more HP with a cold air intake because it has a much less restrictive path for the air to follow, but it exposes the intake to the the elements IE water during a creek crossing etc.
Our friend Dave hydro locked a motor last year because of one.:(
Actual Ram Air is a functional scoop made into the hood or front valance of a vehicle meant to increase air flow the faster you go. A forward facing snorkel intake would have the same effect.
Hope this helps.

In my opinion snorkles are a waste of money. Yes they work, but how often do you have water over your hood? I've been wheeling for close to 20 years now starting in mud in PA to rocks here I have never needed one.
rubican!

i would agree with hadfield on this one but if its what you want to do for your jeep then do it. Out of all the JK snorkels it would come doen to the AEV or the Riverraider. To be honest i would go with the riverraider because i like steel. But for the money the aev one is nice. But the JK's factory airbox does a great job as long as you dont "fly"through water.

Thanks Matt x2 . . . yeah been waiting for back to back posts from you two. :D
OK you got my boring version on how they work now you have insight on why you should buy one.
I have to agree on both points . . . kind of a wasted expense and it's YOUR rig do what you want.:thumb:
Now spend the $ on armor and let's go wheeling!!!!:driving:

i'm going to have to disagree with y'all on this one. first, water doesn't need to be over your hood to get water into the air box. back when i was on 32's and liked the mud/water, i felt it was cheap insurance against needing an entirely new motor.
and yes, i've had water over the hood twice. that being said, i don't plan on doing that stupid stuff ever again. but you never know what you'll have to drive through so it's still cheap insurance.
but if you don't plan on doing any water fording, it's not needed.

I'm with Fitch on this, I run one for insurance only. You never know when a good storm will roll up and turn that next creek you have to cross into a river.

so ive got the airraid cold air intake which has no cover over the filter and if i were to go through some deep water the factory closed box with a snorkel would definatly be better than an open filter;
correct ?:confused:

Yes, the open filter can suck the water in a closed up snorkel system shouldn't. I also have extended vents on the diffs, tranny, T-case. My distributor cap is sealed and has a fitting threaded into it and that vent is also extended.
