Thanks. It'll be nice to finally get to drive it again.. but I still have some work cut out for me. Still have a list of things to do before I go get it inspected again.
new battery
35-37 inch tires
ome coil springs for the rear
make new control arms
custom panhard bar
make a front driveshaft
plus I still have a few things to finish up on the sas

96+ tacoma trd edition(came standard)
and some of the fj80 landcruisers & lx450's came with them as well.
They are not direct bolt ons but it is simple enough to do.. you gotta cut a notch out of the axle housing where the locker actuator sits and drill and tap one or two holes for longer studs. The yota solid front axle uses the same diff so you can use them in the front or rear if you get something with a sfa.

Well for the first time I have driven it today. I had to limp it home doing about 25mph going down 460. But i finally made it home. I'm definately going to have to tear apart the axle again cause something is not right in it. The hubs aren't unlocking and I have diff lube leaking through one of axle seals.
Heres a couple bad cell phone pictures but it gets the point across.

The worst thing about it is that my coil springs are so soft that the leafs do not want to compress so 90% of my flex is still coming from the rear. Maybe it will soften up some after it gets broken in but I think I need to go with some stiffer coils when I get around to doing the rear.

It has been at my work since we moved. Didn't have enough space at the house while I was working on the jeep trying to get it running. Now that it is doing well, I can put the 4runner in the garage and start working on it.

no, no, no.. no jumping for me. if I wanted to jump it I would have gone to a long travel ifs system.
Gotcha, well just keep in mind that the toyotas with ifs had longer rear axles so unless you can find a matching front and rear set from an fj80 you'll need to run wheel spacers up front to use a rear axle that came with a locker and a pre 86 sfa.

Whilst fixing some dinner for me and my daughter in the kitchen. I glanced out the window only to see my 4runner rolling. The front brakes are still a bit iffy so I was not ready to move it to the lower garage yet so I had it parked up top.. well.. it must have popped out of gear and had the e-brake give loose cause it went rolling down the hills.
In this photo.. where I am standing is where the 4runner was parked and you can kind of see it to the left.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/cootees/4runner/P1000164.jpg
Luckily enough it didn't roll straight into a few large trees somehow it veered right through a clearing and hit a few small trees and vines at the very bottom of the hill which stopped it just before going into the creek.
I'm midway down the driveway and you can see had it went straight it would have run right into the big trees but it veered through the clearing on the right.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/cootees/4runner/P1000166.jpg
When I went down to check on the damage it had broke a tie rod and dented the front bumper but that is all of the damage that I have come across so far. I'll probably have to get a neighbors bobcat down there to pull me up out of it.

Yes, we moved. Had to move back in with my parents for a little while. When my wife was out of a job for a few months last year, financially speaking we were struggling badly so we had to make a few changes.

Stock fj80 on the left. ome 860 on the right. As you can see the height is relatively the same but more wraps and much heavier allows and additional 2" of lift plus it with the heavyness of the coils it should help stiffen up the rear a bit.

I took advantage of the sportsmans warehouse closing down a few weeks ago and bought a 60" hi-lift for $45 and bought hi-lifts bed mounting system for $10. I made it work on my surco basket using a piece of flat stock I had lying around.
It's to the same effect of the axe/shovel mounts I made a while back using the quick fist.

Can't find the camera but here is what I have been working on today.
Heres the specs on the rear disc swap I am doing.
Brackets are from a board member of yotatech who made them.
86-95 v6 4 piston callipers
96-00 tacoma front rotors.
Adjustable proportioning valve.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/cootees/4runner/IMAGE_00007.jpg
Went into this thinking it would be super simple with just a little bit of grinding... well that little bit of grinding actually took me about 3 hours today. Brackets, callipers and adjustable proportioning valve should be here sometime this week so I can finish it up next weekend.

Worked on the brakes a bit more today. Finally found the bolts and proper spacing\location for the bracket to make it work properly. One side is done and mounted. I'll fool with the other side tomorrow.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/cootees/4runner/P1000386.jpg
The existing hard lines are just short enough that they will not reach the calipers so I'll have to get some more stainless braided lines made up for me at cardinal rubber.
Here is a ss braided line(upper line) that they made up for me a week or two ago to replace an existing hard line in the front.

I doubt I will have a winch. I have not done any studying on them to even know which one I need to get to keep it that compact. Mainly I just want the added protection and recovery points for now. When I am ready to get a winch I will probably start all over or do something completely different.
As far as the 3 link goes. I gotta weight the options but i'm leaning more towards a triangulated 3 link.. ever done one of those?

35's most likely. I'm trying to find a decent used set that I don't have to put a lot of money into just to get me rolling then I can determine if I want to stay there or move up, no larger than a 37.
I know I would hae to do something with the fuel tank. I'd probably put a fuel cell between the frame rails where the factory spare was.

Probably a long time seeing as how I have not hit a trail in 2 years. :rotflmao5:
In all seriousness it's hard to tell in the pic but it is basically just behind the rear axle and it is tucked up higher than my exhaust still so i'm thinking it should last a while.. If not it's a cheap light and we have tons of them at work. so replacing and/or relocating it will not be an issue.

I'm working on it. I still need new tires and i'd like to do my rear shocks before I take it on anything technical.. even then i'm going to have to take it easy, it's going to be a whole new vehicle for me with the sas and locker.

Definately take the time to learn your new set up my friend. Looks like you will be very pleased with it . . . for a toyota.:harhar:
Seriously shoot me a PM with contact info got some info on shock placement for you and too tired to type.

I did a bit of checking around just to make sure I didn't have anything rubbing or bumping anything else. Some things were really close but I guess it's good.
I also noticed my stock upper link is bent from hitting my gas tank so i might be trying to fix that sooner than I thought.

Driving it on the street for a few weeks. Somehow my drivers front broke 5 of the 6 wheel studs. Not sure if it was the wheel spacers or something else that caused it.

just wondering, why do you have the spacers? tire rub?

To match the rear axle. The toy sfa isn't as wide as the ifs rear. Until I can find a hp fj80 sfa I have to use spacers.

ugh... oh... I started buying new toys. Still gotta get everything else for the dual case setup.. but its a start. Plan is to keep 2.28 in the front and run 4.70 in the rear case.

and I picked up a front ds.. which I will have chris do his magic on for me.

I may know where there is an FJ80 front end. But the steering is a pain to work out. You can use the IFS hubs with fj62 roters. redrill the caliper for a through bolt so the caliper is ont he outside of the bracket versus the inside of the bracket. This will net you I think a 1 1/2" wider axle.

But what I'm saying is you don't need the 80 front end. Do yo still have your IFS stuff?

Nope. Im using fj60 rotors now with ifs calipers but sfa hubs.
Sky-Manufacturing made a kit to allow you to use ifs hubs but I can't find it on their site anymore.
I understand what you are saying but i'm not sure how the caliper is going to give me an extra 1.5". Guess it is something I would have to see.
Not a big deal anymore. I have not had anymore problems with breaking wheel studs since I got some studs from Napa instead of advance like everyone suggested.

Look at these 2 posts. By mounting the caliper to the other side of the bracket from stock, it allows you to run a shallower dish disc with the longer hub.

I see. Not bad.. it just "looks" improper.
I'll keep it in mind if I ever start to break more studs though.

if im not mistaking, ive read, hadden tried in yet, is to use the ifs spinal with the ifs rotors and calibers and it gets you the extra 1" or so per side.. i will look and see if i can find that out again.. i have all that here in the garage..

Had some spare time to kill today at work so I drug out the forklift to see what I am dealing with. Welp... definitely gonna have to trim. Also my bilsteins are too long in the front. I am bottoming out the shocks way before they hit my bumpstops. So i'm gonna have to get some shorter shocks or add bump stop extensions.
Pics.

Rear tire is so close to rubbing and it's not even fully compressed yet. :/

Phil the flex looks really balanced. I wouldn't mess with the bump stops yet. I'd trim and move the shock mounts around. Measure compressed and extended and go from there.
What's up with the beadlock rings?
cootees
10-27-2010, 02:43 PM
Thanks. I'll look into the mounts. I just don't know how much I can actually move them around.
The guy I got them from just welded rock rings straight to the lip for strength.
Theoretically they could probably be turned into beadlocks easy enough.
hadfield4wd
10-27-2010, 02:47 PM
Yes they could be. Find out where he got them so the bolt holes line up. Also are they fully welded so there wouldn't be any leaks?
Oh and you can move the mounts anywhere. You have a welder. Up into the cab etc. The front you can do hoops and also you could do that in the rear just through the floor.
cootees
10-27-2010, 03:07 PM
Yeah, I guess I could get longer hoops and cut through the front fender wells. That might be the more fun option.

If you're talking only front that is a standard option with all the sas kits. And the inner fenders need cut.
