WJ has been having problems with shifting. To further complicate things, today the engine just completely died while on 220 at about 60 mph. I slowed down to pull over, and the engine came back to life. I drove the rest of the way in to the office with no problems.
I pulled P0320 on the odometer. Looks like CPS needs replacing. Anything I need to know about to do this? Seems pretty straight forward, just a PITA to get to from what I hear.

CPS pretty straight forward but yea PITA to get to. :furious-3::banghead: Add a lil dialectric grease in the connector when you install new sensor. I will check for more info on code when I get home Rick.
What did you find out about the tranny so far?

nothing yet. I'm taking it this weekend to a friend's brother's place to get looked at out towards bedford.

Whats the tranny doing? We had a sensor fail in the wj that caused all sorts of problems. It wasn't shifting right and it felt like it would start out in first gear.

It's not wanting to shift on occasion. When it does, it makes a good bang/clunk sound. I have to manually shift it every so often.
You know what sensor you had to replace on yours Phil?

I have no clue what sensor it was. That sounds similar to what happened with ours except I can not recall ever hearing a clunking sound. I know I had the dealer look at it and they wanted $1200 to fix it. We ended up taking it to salem automatic transmission and had it fixed for $400.

P0320 Ignition/Distributor Engine
Speed Input Circuit Malfunction
That should be the CPS. Could also be the stator or synch sensor
I would also replace the TPS and see if that helps the tranny situation out
Rick check all of the under hood grounds as well, a loose/bad connection would cause several issues.

Simple and easy TPS test.
Throttle Position Sensor(TPS)
Disconnect TPS from harness hook up the leads from your volt meter to the sensor itself. While running a resistance test (ohm) Move the throttle lever open slowly and look at the reading. You should get a steady slow increase and decrease as it travels in either direction. If you see erratic jumps and drops in resistance while moving the lever through out it's range the TPS is bad.
I admit I just cheat and run a data steam with the scanner now a days, it's just much faster. But even when it shows the TPS to be suspect I usually run the above test to make sure after inspecting the connector.
X2 on the grounds they can wreak havoc on alot of systems in your ride if they are faulty. :furious-3:
Hope this helps

I replaced the CPS, engine is back to normal. I drove it up to Food Lion and back...about 10 miles...and it shifted fine the whole time. I'm hoping the CPS was causing the tranny to booger up somehow. I'm taking it to the shop out towards beford tomorrow morning to get it checked out though.

it was a transmission speed sensor (input or output sensor). all is well again with the bubble-j.
