yeah i do need to get a hi-lift but i need to learn how to safely use it first.heard some stories about the hi-lift.one thing i know is to use a long hammer for knocking the pin out when you are done using it.

Safety? What's that :harhar:

Seriously though, they can surely be dangerous, and very unstable, but they really come in handy! I have been attacked by a hi-lift before, luckily all it did was give me a bruise and small cut, could have been much worse (especially since it was under a FS Waggy at the time)!

I can say I've never taken hammer to knock any pins out. However, it is a good idea to keep it in the locked position when not in use.

it was something like a hammer in case it came slamming down.

on another note, the guy doing the work on my jeep took pictures along the way so i will post those up when i get it back monday.cant wait. :wings: now to find a place to flex the long arms thats legal and close by.

what did you decide to go with on tires?

will you have the new rears in too?

Hokie98zj
02-22-2009, 12:31 AM
i havent gotten the tires yet.i will be picking it up with the axles and long arms on.he said the rear sits higher because of the perches.i bought some 2" spacers that i will put up front that should level it out. will have to redo the exhaust soon too.he is going to put it to where i should at least be able to make it to roanoke and get a new exhaust put on.thinking the 70 series.

next mods:
new exhaust
add spacers
swap in kor track bar conversion
after those things i can get tires(probably km2s)

I love my 40 series. They have that new diamond plate 40 series too that is suppose to take a bit more of a beating. Pefection on Peter's Creek made the cat back on Big Red.

what size tires are ya going with? 35s were the last size i think you were talking about.

They are specific to the delta flow 40 series. They are called the Off Road series. They still look and sound like crap imo but I may be a bit biased. I hate the sound of flowmasters. Plus flowmaster only has like a 2 month warranty against manufacturer defects.. kinda pitiful if you ask me.

the 40 series cant be any louder than what it is now.he has it where theres only a couple inches after the cat sticking out.its still up in the air what i will get but i did like the sound of the 70 series a guy on nagca posted up after he got it put on.

:sigh: i hate the waiting game...the 231 pictured above is being taken up to richmond monday.get that put in with an sye that was just ordered..wait for the sye to come in and get a correct measurement for the rear ds and then the jeep is finally back on the road again.im really really hoping that the stuff comes in and i can get everything done by like the 11th or 12.

while im waiting on parts though,im adding 2" spacers to the front to level it out(ballastic fab brackets on 44 raised the springs 2"s) and adding the kor tbc.here are some pics the guy posted on nagca.should get the rest on monday and might take some myself while im up there.

03-02-2009, 08:53 PM
The magnaflow like that will still be loud. Thats about the size of the magnaflow that matt put on his xj. Not sure if he did a turn down or not but keep in mind that turn downs on suv's like that can fail inspections. Pretty sure it has to exit past the rear axle for it to pass.

Anyways, if you have heard matts cherokee than it should ultimately sound similar. Good choice btw.. magnaflow ftw!

Hokie98zj
03-02-2009, 09:00 PM
the white zj belongs to the guy doing the work.he has an hp30/d44 with about 7"s on 36s.i guess i will have to have the exhaust routed around the suspension afterall if it is illegal like that.i hope it isnt though.

Mine goes all the way to the back. I have an extension that I put on for inspections so it exits past the body. I like the magnaflow because its small and allowed my room to put my traction bar on the passenger side where it belongs. That fact should help you in routing around your 4 link. It is kinda loud, but not offensive.

Got it. You could do exactly as pictured above, but have the exhaust go over the links right in the middle then do a 90 deg and exit out. Not the best for flow, but will most likly not hit and be legal.

need to go get an alignment done tomorrow after work and need to figure out the speedo.it doesnt work right now.while at Matt's(moonworksoffroad) place,we pulled the speedo gear out and he spun it which made the speedometer go up to 40 instantly.dont know whats causing it to not work while its in the tcase.

also need to move the rear springs a little to straighten them out.my wheelbase is now about 107"s.with the spacers up front it sits right about level f/r.didnt need to downshift much if any going up hills with the 4.88s in.

Hokie98zj
03-19-2009, 09:19 AM
anyone know why my speedometer doesnt work when when the sensor is in the t-case?like i mentioned, when we took the sensor out and spun it,it registered on the speedometer.tried all 4 of the positions it can go in i believe.

hadfield4wd
03-19-2009, 11:01 AM
The only thing is in the different positions is where it makes contact. It must not be making contact. That is all I know about speedo's. Unless this is what you need to know about.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k51/hadfield4wd/Misc%20goofy%20stuff/2q2470g.jpg

I like the jeep by the way. What did you do for exhaust?

95greenrio
03-19-2009, 01:43 PM
What he said.

I remember when I did my SYE install it said you needed to make sure that you reinstalled the speedo sensor so that it was "clocked" the same as when you took it out. This is assuming you have a 231.

Hokie98zj
03-19-2009, 09:22 PM
not the picture i needed matt.i'll try in the morning to have it in the right position.for right now im using my phones gps thing for a speedoMETER.right now i havent fixed the exhaust.it is loud and does get annoying as i go but cant do anything about it yet

xjtrailrider
03-19-2009, 11:12 PM
You need the speedo to at least work some in order for the ECU/TCU to function as it should. OBD2 uses the speed sensor input to adjust timing, shift points etc. On the OBD2 equipped models you rotate the sensor counterclockwise until you have tooth contact and then back it off a little to align the notches with the fingers on the hold down clamp.

Do you have the correct gear for your ratio/tire size? If not now is the time to fix that as well. Quadratech sells the gears but you have to call them, they are not on the site.

Hokie98zj

i would love for the speedometer to start working.i dont care if its a couple mph off,i can deal with that but when its showing 0mph 24/7,it gets kind of annoying.im going to see if the gear is just in wrong tomorrow morning.i dont know what else to do if that doesnt work.should i have kept the speedo gear from my 249?will that make a difference?

The connector plugs into the sensor correct? If so then it should work, I doubt the 249 gear would have been the same but I could be wrong.

Hokie98zj
03-20-2009, 12:22 PM
from what i have gotten out of this so far,the sensor should work.it might be off more than it was before but should show something.

the sensor is indexed for 4 spots, all of which i think were tried with no luck.we did pull it out and spin it by hand which showed up on the speedometer so it does work.hopefully its just we thought all 4 spots were tried but really 3 were.

did you put the 231 in yet? I thought all of the Jeep T-cases used the same speedo gears just different ratios. I think i remember seeing a chart somewhere that told you what color to use per your tire sized and gears. i will see if i can find it.

it will be a little longer before i get the tires.i have to get new exhaust done, new shocks and quicker discos.its really loud right now and all my neighbors are old or young w/ babies.i had a neighbor mention the noise as i was getting the speedometer to work.

If you haven't done so, you may need to extend the rear spring towers. LA'd ZJs like to loose rear springs. Limiting straps will likely be a must as well.

Hokie98zj
03-27-2009, 05:42 PM
ive heard 2 different things.should the rear pinion be pointing straight at the t-case or almost parallel to the ground?had it alligned when i got it back and they put the rear to just about parallel to the ground. heres how it sits now..

TrailReadyMJ
03-27-2009, 05:49 PM
With the SYE and CV shaft, it should be pointing at the t-case output.
With leaves you would want it about 2* lower to account for the axle wrap. Although there may be some give, this isn't as important with links.
Either way, it looks like yours needs to move up.

Hokie98zj
03-27-2009, 07:40 PM
well.it was pointing up but the guy when he did the alignment, pointed it down lower.he told me to come back in about a week to have the steering wheel straightened out.should i get him to put it back?

Big Red 95
03-27-2009, 09:10 PM
Yea as far as pinion angle i have always thought the you want it pointing at the T-case. but with the CV style drive shaft it doe not look like you would have any problems with the way it is set anyway.

Hokie98zj
04-03-2009, 11:51 AM
got my exhaust done.only way i could fit the f40 or f50 was to have it sit like 2-3 inches lower than the cat because of where the long arms mount.instead went with something similar to what nrv has on his.its a lot quieter now for sure.

had from the cat back changed to 2.5" and a stainless tip added.

sam called me asking to come pull him out of a rut he was hung up in at a place in Salem.i ended up getting hung up on both axles myself.he called someone else that pulled me out and then they got in his jeep and drove it out after a couple minutes of trying.

in this first picture you can see where my fire extinguisher went off.i keep one right between my seat and door for quick access.when i was stuck i didnt have much space to open the door and caught the fire extinguisher with my leg and it went off.

Sorry I did not see you post until now. I have not cruised Williamson in a while. I use to when i drove my TA more. I did not know you or any other ZJs cruised Williamson. I saw one last year when i was just driving home. I live one block off Williamson. I here them every weekend. I will PM you with my email addresses let me know next time you will be out and i will try to make it out after we get the kiddies to bed.

Need to get them 35s to handle the ruts

When i get a chance i plan on putting 35" KM2s on the G-Wagon.

quick question.i went and picked up a 4" craftsman angle grinder earlier.didnt see any cut off wheels.
do all cutoff wheels have the same mounting holes, etc?i want to go by northern tool or the other hardware store near me and pick up some 3 or 4" cut off wheels if just any will fit.if not, should i take it back and get one that does offer cut off wheels for that model?

hadfield4wd

No they are not all the same. You need to know the arbor diameter. Should be 3/8" for a 4" angle grinder. Just take it in with you.

i ended up going to lowes this morning and getting a handful of 4" cut off wheels.should've picked up two handfuls though to have extra.

trimmed a bit on the passenger side but getting the angle grinder in the driver side wheel well is kind of a pain with the space it needs to go in .makes me want to start cutting the fenders to open it up some more. this is probably the best 60 bucks I've spent in a while.really trying to get the 35s on by monday so i'll be out there trimming again in the morning.

Just looking at your drive shaft, you will need a longer one if you shove the axle forward, its getting to the limit now. Its hard to believe there is a 4wd harder than a XJ to fit big tires under but I think the ZJ takes the cake.

Hokie98zj
06-02-2009, 12:11 AM
x2 on the drive shaft.i get vibrations now that i think are coming from it when im around 60-65mph+.i'll have to pull it for now and just run without one until i can get a new ds.

once i get the axle pushed forward about an inch,i should be good but i wouldnt be surprised if something else popped up.6"s is the ideal height for 35s on a ZJ.

i can get some more pictures tomorrow.i thought i had a better picture but not yet.did pick up a tow hitch receiver earlier though so i have a rear recovery point finally.

I think the XJ is a little easier to trim the wheel wells on because they do not have that flare to them in the factory sheet metal. You can trim more on the XJ and it does not look as odd.

while i talked to Matt(moonworks) on the phone the other day,he mentioned cutting the rockers to where the sliders are for clearance.i think i will do that in the morning.after that,im going to run by Seacrist's shop and talk to him about fitting the 35s if trimming wont work.why must a jeep have such small wheel wells?

Hokie98zj
06-10-2009, 03:05 AM
tried to post this a minute ago but it erased all i had typed for some reason.

not quite sure i will be able to fit the 35s like i had planned.the front lower control arms are close if not already at the limit for visible thread so not sure i can push the axle forward any.also dont really see anymore that i can trim at the problem area either.may end up with 33" km2s like i had somewhat originally planned.anyone interested in some 35s?

most of the local open trails are done with 33s anyways right?

you really need to get the 35s mounted to see if you need to trim anymore. I like the idea of trimming the rockers to the wheel wells. you have about an inch more than me on your set up and i have no problems with my 33s. Of course it took a few trips off road and seeing what hit and trimming here and there a little to get it all cleared.

xjtrailrider
06-10-2009, 10:27 PM
I know 35's will fit, can you raise it some more? Also you can put washers under the steering stops to limit turning radius some, that may help.

Big Red 95
06-10-2009, 10:49 PM
looking at the pics some more you really have plenty of room left for trimming. clearance inside the wheel well is just a few swings of a mallet away too. I beat the piss out of the sheet metal at the bottom back of the wheel well behind and to the inside of that plastic liner.

Hokie98zj
06-11-2009, 09:00 AM
im already at 6"s so I'm trying not to go any higher.i think i will go ahead and order a spare wheel tonight after work and mount that to check things out.whenever i get a day off,i'll take the front tires off and really hit inside the wheel wells.i know i dont need but less than an inch to fit them

Hokie98zj

i think that is really what i need,a real sledgehammer.i have been using a 4lb hammer.it would be nice if i could swing left handed like i can right handed so i can get the driver side better.

i have monday off,i am going to take the front tires off one more time and hammer a little bit more then might go try to have the 35s mounted.i have a feeling it will be the driver side that will give me a problem now.

Hokie98zj

if the 35s you got are MTs and have a wider gab between the knows it could just be lug slap. drive at a constant slow speed. like so slow you may have to use the brakes. if it has just started since you put the tires on it is probably just the tires. My buck shot mudders do that too.

I've also seen some guy, i think on Jeep forum, use the factory housings and convert to LEDs. I have thought of doing that at some point as well.If space allowed i would probably put anther amber marker light on the side as well though.

lately i have been having problems with my jeep not wanting to start or even a couple times not starting without a jump start.went by advance to have them test the battery and it showed the battery didnt have enough charge for a test so they are trickle charging it and will test it when it has enough charge. if its my battery i get a new one under warranty but if its my alternator(will do the cable test if its not the battery)i need to get a new one.

wheres a good place to pick up a H.O. alternator?mean green was priced at 389 which is kinda steep right now with Christmas coming up.

ran some errands just a little bit ago and parked in a spot where i had to back out of.got back in my jeep, started up and shifted into reverse but the engine only reved.could hear it shift into reverse but it wouldnt back up.all the other gears worked(could drive forward-against a curb/sidewalk).got some help to push out of the spot and was able to drive home.looked underneath first thing and saw the t-case linkage seemed to be connected.whats with it not moving backwards after shifting into reverse?

Hokie98zj
04-29-2010, 04:40 PM
sounds like linkage..is this the same linkage from the t-case?something a shop should handle(checked haynes manual-its not real clear from the quick glimpse i took on my problem) or something i could do with help/directions at least online?

No, but when I did my wifes Advance had the best price. I swapped it in, in a weekend. I think it was inthe $1300 range. Alot cheaper than a rebuilt one from a shop or Jasper. I then had a shop do all the adjustments. Best warranty as well. I bought a new TV cable. I think the adjustment was $200. That was a year and a half ago. No problems. I sold it to my buddy's daughter.

ALL transmission shops will tell you that, ALL automatic transmissions will have some shavings in the pan. What shop did you take it to?

Your Jeep has the crap-o-matic chrysler tranny in it, I would get a second opinion.

x2 on what Jon said. Check DJ's transmission off of 460. Local owned shop been in business for over 50yrss My family been using them for about as long... Or Fleet Transmission on Williamson was started my Uncle's ex-inlaws. Alot of reputable shops in town that specialize in transmissions, I personally don't trust the likes of firestone, etc... to change my oil. But that's my personal preference....

I don't know of any place to recommend but I never take anything to Firestone. Mo matter what you take your vehicle in for they will tell you there is 20 other problems with your vehicle. if things are tight there are plenty of ZJs in salvager yards around here.

I helped Danny a couple of times and he could rebuild one in a few hours but that was a c4 or a th350. It probably would take 3 or 4 days typically. That would be removal, rebuild, and reinstall. I would say it depends on what they find and how busy they are. A guy at work had his done in his Ford truck ( not sure where) and it took about a week.

20s will have to wait a while..first couple things i plan on doing is getting an intake/silverstars.want to keep this as close to stock as possible.tires and wheels dont really count though just not a priority.

must say i have enjoyed driving a sporty car after 3.5 years behind the wheel of my zj.didnt know you could really take turns at the speed limit..

hopefully i can have the jeep fixed and make it to a big dogs event which by the way i have a question about.i had noticed a vibration(possibly the beginning of death wobble) and looked underneath and noticed the passenger side front lower control arm bracket axle side is twisting(can get a pic later today) and the nut for the body side is spinning loose and i had to tighten it everyday(only drove a couple miles if that a day).what would be the cause/solution to that?

xjtrailrider
08-05-2010, 10:15 PM
Those LCA mounts have taken a hit, that is not caused by the arms twisting. Looks like you slide into a concrete culvert or something. I would straighten them out and weld some plate over them. I used some old XJ rear U-bolt plates on mine and they have held up well.

Yep Jon's right. Those have taken a hit. No need to buy new ones. Bend them back and plate then like Jon said. Then weld some 1/4" plate to the bottom and maybe a small gusset. They'll be plenty strong.

the only time i could think of hitting something was when i slid onto and over a curb in the snow once but cant see how that would have really come close to the mounts.

its cool if you still have them Sean.have no problem buying from clayton's again.sent you a pm a couple days ago btw about the stock control arms.

Holy crap don't take it to the dealership. Jsut about anywhere will be able to do the rear main seal. Chuck at Automotive Service in Salem can do it and is fair. 389-2514.

RMS is a easy job on a 4.0. Jack her up, put it on jack stands, remove tires/wheels, droop the axle, drain the oil, disconnect the battery, remove the starter, drop the pan, remove the rear main, tap the old seal out with a piece of plastic, aluminum or brass (something softer than steel). Install new seal by the instructions, i use FelPro. Torque the rear main to spec, clean it all up and put it all back together. Save a ton of money!

I have done so many I could do them in my sleep! 3-4 hour job tops
