I realized my old thread was lost earlier this year.
This was Gabe's Jeep (grandpa). He bought it brand new in 1980 and daily drove it up until 1991 when he parked it. Since 1991, he put 250 miles on it up through last September when I got her.
The day she came home

After a lot of work to get her running, and new wheels and tires
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m42/RUparrothead/j-truck/100_1520.jpg
After a TON of sanding and 2 layers of high build primer over the weekend

More to come in the following weeks.

OE dark green metallic. AMC/Jeep only had this color available in 1980, and it looks gooooooooooddddd. I decided to paint myself, as $$$ is an issue. It may not be perfect, but I'm having a lot of fun doing it myself. However, I'll be glad when it's all done and back together :rotflmao5:

Here is a pic ( THIS IS NOT MINE!!!! ) of a j-truck in a dark metallic green. THIS IS NOT OE GREEN, BUT SO DANG CLOSE it's not even funny. This picture has been my desktop photo for the last 3 weeks at work to keep me motivated during this process.

You won't get that finish with a spray can. You'll need a halfway decent gun and a base + clear paint. I'm sure there is an automotive paint store around that can help. You'll also want a buffer.
You'll need to remove the bed and doors. Do all the jambs first then go back and blend the rest. Do many light coats. You don't need to cover it all in one shot. Also anywhere there is a seam or crease or bend in the steel it will tend to drip and run from there.

Thanks Matt. I actually do have a base coat and clear coat from ppg Omni line ready to go.
I do have quite a few drips from spraying the primer, just like you said, in the creases and bends in the body. I've started to wetsand them with 600 grit per manufacturers recommendations.
I'm learning a LOT about bodywork/paint. It's a fun project, but much more time consuming than I realized.

You'll be happy. It always takes longer than you think. make sure that prep is good and the rest will be better. That primer needs to be smooth if you want the paint smooth.

x2 on what Matt said... it is time consuming but very self gratifying when completed... I did my jeep myself, plus all my antique car projects. A quality spray gun is a must... I'd go for HVLP, thats my favorite by far from the old school guns to newer ones. Deviliblish are decent for a good price.. all varying prices & qualities

Spray all seams and harsh lines first this will create a stronger base to keep you from burning through when you get to the color sand and buff stage(NOT FUN BTW) but worth it for a great finish in the end. Learning how to chase a (dry line) will also give you better results.
X2 on JT's words about Devilbiss I have 2 Devilbiss guns, some old some newer and a couple off brands as well. You can get good quality HVLP guns through Tool Web at a great price. They are not professional grade but serve there purpose quite well. Just keep them CLEAN!
Im sure you have already read up on different nozzle diameter openings for different materials. Some for primer, some for base coats, others for clear and so on. A single gun kept clean between stages can do it all but you are gonna have more time in colorsanding etc in the end.
Between the sentimental value of the truck and the fact its a J-10 I cant help but grin every time I see this thread. :2thumbsup:
Keep the updates coming!

Awesome! Sucks that it caught fire, but good job on keeping it going. I've got a list a mile long of places for parts, let me know if you're looking for anything in particular and I can point you in the right direction.

www.bjsoffroad.com - best site for new fsj parts
www.zmjeeps.com - their site sucks, but Zach delivers awesome customer service on the phone.
if you're up for a roadtrip... jakes fsj junkyard in burnsville NC (about 4-5 hours). They have 80 fsj's in their front yard. You pull parts, and CHEAP CHEAP prices ( I got 5 nice OEM jeep aluminum wheels for $125 total ). To get ahold of them, sign up on www.ifsja.org and find username halftrac or tanker (Jake and Jackie).
Tell them RUparrothead/Rick sent ya! Great folks to deal with.

Yup, I love the gladiator "rhino" grills. I would love to do one someday, but they are highly sought after in the FSJ circles. This unfortunately makes a nice setup around $400-$500.
I'm going to get more paint to finish up the front right quarter panel, and I will go ahead and do the area behind the grill also.

Update:
I haven't done a dang thing to this all week, been super busy. However, I did decide it would be wise to inspect the paint out in natural sunlight as opposed to overhead garage lights which seem to throw shadows everywhere. I found a spot or two I need to touch up when I finish spraying (tomorrow hopefully). Anyway, I grabbed some pics outside.

Do you have any idea why you got bad orange peel? I could ask some of my friends who are good at this stuff.

Because I did it myself:D
Against everyone's advice, I'm going to leave it for now. I am out of time to have it ready for Thanksgiving. I can only work on it every other weekend (have the baby every other weekend while wifey is working). This weekend I have in-laws coming into town. Weekend after I have baby. Then it is Thanksgiving. By the time I get home at night (730-8pm), I'm exhausted and don't want to work in the garage for more than 20 minutes or so. That being said, I have no more "days" to work on it before Thanksgiving.
I need to get it back on the road and out of my garage. I'm going to reassemble everything just to get it moving, and will wetsand in the next few months on a nice warm sunny winter day.
That being said, I took off the tape and newspaper last night, and unfortunately I had some tiny chips of paint come off with the tape. I will HAVE to touch this up in a few spots, to hopefully prevent peeling of the paint.
All in all, the reason I took on this project was to make it look better (not perfect, but better). I've had a lot of fun doing this, but in all honesty, I will never attempt to paint a vehicle again. By the time I've purchased the equipment, materials, and time invested, it would have been better to let someone else do it. Oh well, I have good memories of working on GABES GP, and it certainly looks a hell of a lot better than it did (even with the orange peel).
I can't wait for Thanksgiving. I have already made plans to pick up Grandpa...he has no idea I've been doing this with his truck. I can't wait to see his face :sSc_eek2:
I should have "after" pics this weekend (all except wetsanding and buffing the orange peel).

Orange peel is the devil... alot of times caused by too much pressure from compressor, or paint going on too heavy. Looks good bro.

Rick I was trying to post from my phone yesterday to no avail. Anyway Orange peel more comes from too much hardener. The paint dries too quickly causing the cracks. Wet sand it with really really fine. Then buff it a couple of times. You'll never make it go away, but you can diminish it greatly.
Also your grandfather will be pleased.
Wouldn't the next paint job be cheaper and easier? You'll only get better. That being said I did a great job for your first time.

I need to touch up the bumpers (herculiner), and am going to also roll on the fender flares and bottom section of fenders and doors in herculiner. All in all, even with orange peel, I'm VERY happy.

He was speechless. He started to tear up a bit when he saw it. On the ride home, he just simply said "I'm glad you wound up with the truck, it's in good hands".
It was certainly worth the countless hours in the garage working on it!

Looks great, and thats awesome with your Grandpa. My grandfather passed away back in 1996 and I have his truck. The paint is really rough and right now it is just sitting out in the back field but I need to get it back on the road again. Its a 1989 Chevy Silverado unfortunately 2WD but I can tell you that there isn't a time I drive it that I don't have a memory of him.
