should be 5k pounds IIRC. you will want to install a tranny cooler though if you come close to that much.

5k with tranny cooler, you need trailer brakes with anything over 3k or your gonna regret towing with it. The XJ is plenty strong to get 5k going but you only have 3.5k trying to stop it, its a tug of war you will loose in a panic stop.

I added brakes to my bass boat trailer and the boat/trailer weighs 3100#, still scary sometimes, mostly in the rain.

yeah i dont think it would make a good tow rig for your 8. Id imagine the way it sits it probably weighs at least 3800 maybe more plus the weight of the trailer you would be right at the capacity.

XJ's feel big until you put a trailer behind them then you realize they are narrow and short, a bad combo for towing a serious load!

My bass boat is a 19 footer and I would guess the trailer/boat combo is pushing 24'

Was not really intending on pulling the 8 with it. Going to pick up car trailer soon and was just curious. Thanks for the info guys.

I'm literally putting the buggy before the horse on this one huh.:rolleyes-1:

Looks like I'm in the market for a tow rig soon any body run across something reasonably priced let me know.

Jon you sell that boat yet or did you decice to keep it?

You will be fine towing a empty car trailer. I still have the boat, not really trying to sell it but I will entertain any reasonable offer!

I've looked into this already as well. For my next project, I would like to get something that can tow a car trailer on short distances so I have been looking around at my options. I have seen many people have good results using the v8 zj's but I am a bit iffy about towing such a load with a unibody. I've also been looking at fj60's, fj80's, waggy's and even a few scout II's.

Thats something I might look into picking up in the next few months.. just depending on how much work I'll have to put into it.

You'll be fine towing an empty trailer.

People rag on unibody's for towing, but it's more of a power thing. You can look at the manual to see what it will tow. For the v8 it's not a big deal. However for me my next tow rig will haul the family and the gear. Mine won't be a dd either.

Howery has towed with a unibody and his was a 4.0. In fact he's towed my jeep to Uwharrie. (But that's a different story) It was slow but got us there and back.

I think the FJ80s are great. The FJ60's have the same power issues. I wouldn't even think of a scout II for towing.
